Korean researchers unveiled next-generation core technologies for broadcasting and media powered by artificial intelligence (AI) at the world's largest exhibition in the United States. These technologies are expected to accelerate innovation across the media and broadcasting industries and further strengthen Korea's leadership in the global market.

ETRI at NAB 2025

Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) showcased the latest broadcasting and media technologies, developed by its researchers, at NAB 2025—the world's largest international broadcasting equipment exhibition—held at the Las Vegas Convention Center in the United States over four days from April 5.

Key Technologies Unveiled

At the exhibition, ETRI unveiled:

  • Intelligent Multi-View OTT player technology
  • Metaverse trust layer technology to protect user privacy
  • User sovereignty, volumetric asset creation, and trading technology
  • Immersive video spatial computing technology for ultra-realistic metaverse services
  • User-selectable UHD stereoscopic media service technology

Intelligent Multi-View OTT Player

ETRI's intelligent OTT player technology provides a Multi-View experience of objects on screen using AI to detect and analyze viewer interest. It offers detailed object information and can generate rotated left-right multi-view images when users interact with objects. This supports additional services like shopping links and advertisements, and enhances personalization by combining object-based recommendations with viewing history.

Metaverse Trust Layer Technology

This layer protects user privacy by masking personal information and blocking potential network adversaries from tracking user activities in the metaverse. It ensures a secure and immersive experience free from privacy concerns.

User Sovereignty Volumetric Asset Creation and Trading

This technology allows users to turn their physical possessions into 3D digital assets for trade in metaverse marketplaces. Core components include object decomposition from point cloud data, full 3D asset completion, automatic metadata generation, and marketplace integration.

Immersive Video Spatial Computing

This system builds 3D environments that replicate real-world spaces. Through 3D spatial reconstruction and volume rendering, it enables immersive event experiences such as concerts and sports. Users can navigate freely in these spaces for a heightened sense of presence.

User-Selectable UHD Stereoscopic Media

This technology allows seamless switching between 2D and 3D formats in an OTT-based ATSC 3.0 environment without needing dedicated 3D content. It also supports VR and AR for immersive media consumption.

Industry Reception

"The AI-powered media technologies presented by ETRI at NAB 2025 represent a significant technological breakthrough for the future of the broadcasting and media industry," said Curtis LeGeyt, president of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB).

Research and Development Support

The technology was developed with support from the Ministry of Science and ICT through projects focused on:

  • OTT player intelligence technology for Multi-View experiences
  • Blockchain convergence for trusted metaverse environments
  • Photo-realistic stereoscopic spatial computing for hyper-realistic services
  • Development of original technologies for stereoscopic media and content
