New Partnership Teaching AI to Educators

A new program from the Adelaide University’s Computer Science Education Research (CSER) Group will upskill teachers in the ways of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

CSER, based in the School of Computer Science, has provided open, online professional learning in digital technologies, AI, cybersecurity and mathematics for Australian teachers since 2014.

Now, CSER is partnering with the global charity the Raspberry Pi Foundation to bring the Experience AI program to Australia.

Experience AI, developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation and Google DeepMind, and funded by Google.org in Australia, supports teachers in the exciting and fast-moving area of AI, and gets young people passionate about the subject.

Grounded in rigorous research, the free teaching materials include lesson plans, slide decks, videos, student activities, and assessments that introduce students to the foundations of AI.

The resources also explore some of the key challenges associated with AI systems, from data-privacy, misinformation and fact-checking to deepfakes and the responsible use of generative AI.

CSER Project Lead and Senior Research Fellow Dr Rebecca Vivian said the new partnership would build on the work they’ve already started.

“Teachers will have access to lesson plans with speaker notes, slide decks, videos, student activities, and assessments, while students will get to experience cutting-edge AI education tools and classroom activities to demystify how AI systems function in student-friendly ways,” she said.

“Along the way our Project Officers will be able to help teachers upskill and implement the Experience AI resources in alignment with the Australian Curriculum.

“It’s exciting to be piloting the Experience AI program in Australia, and joining 195 other countries in expanding AI education.”

Raspberry Pi Foundation CEO Philip Colligan CBE said he was delighted to welcome CSER to the Experience AI global network.

“We are looking forward to equipping teachers with the skills needed to teach AI confidently, ensuring it’s both engaging and relevant for their students,” he said.

“Through the partnership, we aim to ensure that young people in Australia develop a foundational understanding of AI technologies and the role that they can play in their lives."
